GOD WAS WITH HIM
That’s what I want this year; a “GOD WAS WITH HIM” year. Why is this so important? Because the last person in scripture you would expect to have this spoken over is the best person to answer the question: Jesus.
Acts 10:38 says:
…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
I about came out of my skin when I read the last five words of that verse, “for God was with him.” I guess I had always assumed that God was, well… with Jesus. Why in the world wouldn’t He be? If they are one and the same then why would God feel it necessary to point this out in scripture? Well, as it turns out, the answer is as wonderful as it is strange. Jesus’ lessons tend to be that way.
Remember chapter 3 of Mathew’s gospel? Jesus is being baptized and the Father and Holy Spirit are in attendance. The Father speaks and the Spirit does the oddest thing. He descends and rests upon Jesus like a dove. Now, according to scripture, Jesus never took a single step toward His ministry until this moment— until His Father’s blessing and the Spirit’s anointing rested upon Him. Can you believe that? Even Jesus waited until– God was with Him.
Jesus left His calling in the patient hands of His Father. In terms of spiritual fruit, both calling and fruit sat on the vine, ripening for 30 long years until this pivotal moment: until Father and Spirit rested upon Him. An all powerful Son waited for His Dad’s approval. Good grief, the restraint of God(Jesus) is the unsung miracle of scripture to me. Then and only then did Jesus pluck that fruit and take His first steps toward His bride.
A.W. Tozer says it best:
“It is noteworthy, however, that He did not begin His ministry—His deeds of authority and power—until He had been anointed with the Holy Spirit.”
If Jesus waited on the anointing of the Spirit before he moved into his ministry, then how much more should we wait for God’s anointing? If I could be so bold as to add to this great man’s thought: If we’re certain that God’s anointing is upon us, then how much less should we tarry in non-obedience?
By the way, there were more, more of whom it was said, “GOD WAS WITH HIM.” I want to be counted among them. In 2017 I want a “GOD WAS WITH WES” kind of year, and every year after that. I want to learn to close my eyes at night and find rest in the presence that was great enough take away the sins of the whole world, just like Samuel did. I want to brave insecurity and part a sea of fear like Moses did. I want to size up my impossible callings and charge them like a city full of giants, just like Joshua did. I want to write God songs and sing at the top of my lungs of His love for me, just like the warrior-king David did. And I can do it. You can too! We can do it for the same strange and beautiful reason they could— for the exact same reason that Jesus himself did.
